Religious Easter Crafts for Kids

Note:  to work any of our Easter Chick crafts in with a Sunday School theme, one idea is to use Psalm 50:11 (God says I know every bird)

More Religious Easter Crafts:

Garden of Gethsemane

child with terrariumMaterials: Shallow dish or bowl, stones, soil, small plants like sedums or grass seeds, moss. I think 1 cup mason jars work wonderfully!

Activity: I think this is a powerful visual prayer-encouragement for young children as it reminds us that even Jesus used prayer as a way to help face difficult challenges.

Using a shallow layer of stones as the base, kids can construct their own version of the Garden of Gethsemane with soil, adding small plants or planting grass seeds to grow their garden. Stones or moss can be placed strategically on top to create paths or designate areas, providing a hands-on way to connect with this significant location in the Easter story.

If you want this to last longer/be healthier, you can add activated charcoal from the garden center. I never have, but my mom uses it in her terrariums and she's our family's gardening expert!

Stained Glass Church Windows

tissue paper stained glass doveMaterials: Wax paper or clear contact paper, colorful tissue paper, black construction paper, scissors, glue.

Activity: Cut a religious shape from black construction paper and put it in the center of the clear contact paper or glue it to the center of waxed paper -- symbols like doves for peace, fish for faith, or lambs for sacrifice. Children can cut and tear pieces of tissue paper and arrange them on the wax paper sheet with glue or the clear contact paper to mimic the luminous beauty of stained glass windows found in churches. Once complete, these vibrant creations can be displayed on real windows to capture the sunlight, just like actual stained glass.

Easter Story Stones

Materials: Smooth stones, paint or markers.

Activity: Invite children to select stones and decorate them with important symbols from the Easter story, such as palms for Palm Sunday, bread and wine for the Last Supper, tears (feelings of apostles after Jesus' arrest), a rooster for Peter's denial, a crown of thorns, a cross, rays of light coming out of a sun for the resurrection. These decorated stones can then be used to retell the Easter story in an engaging, tactile manner.

He is Risen Paper Plate Wall Hangings

tissue paper he is risen wall hangingMaterials: Paper plate, tissue paper, scissors, string.

Activity: Kids can cut pieces of tissue paper and arrange them to cover a paper plate or circle of cardboard in a decoration they like. I like to make a fringe around the outside first with rectangles of tissue paper, then add a triangle fringe of reds and oranges, then cover the very center with yellow tissue paper to make the whole thing look like a fancy sunshine. From black construction paper, cut out the letters for He is Risen or create imagery that celebrates the resurrection like a cross. Once their design is dry, it can be hung on the wall or a bedroom door.

Dove of Peace Mobile

Materials: Paper or paper plate, markers, glitter, feathers, string.

Activity: Children can craft doves from paper or a paper plate, decorating them with markers, glitter, or even real feathers to add texture. These doves, symbolizing peace and the Holy Spirit, can then be hung from a mobile, creating a peaceful and reflective decoration that gently moves with the air.

handprint doveThe dove ties into the Easter story through its broader symbolism in Christian tradition, representing the Holy Spirit and peace. While doves are not directly mentioned in the accounts of Jesus' resurrection, they are significant in the context of Jesus' life and teachings.

Prayer Chain

paper chainMaterials: Strips of paper, pens, glue or staples.

Activity: Encourage kids to write short prayers or positive messages on paper strips. These strips can then be looped and linked together, secured with glue or staples, to form a chain. This activity can be especially meaningful as a group project, with each link representing an individual's hope or prayer, creating a tangible representation of community and shared faith.

Angel Messengers

Materials: Paper plates or coffee filters, paper or fabric, markers, glue.

Activity: Using paper plates or coffee filters as wings, children can construct angel messengers, using additional paper or fabric to create the body. These angels can be decorated to represent the celestial beings who announced the resurrection, serving as a joyful reminder of the Easter message.
