Biography: Guy Weadick
by
Over a hundred years ago, there was a man named Guy Weadick. Guy was a cowboy, but he was not just any cowboy. He was the man who started the Calgary Stampede, a big festival that celebrates cowboys and their way of life.
Guy was born in the United States in 1885. When he was a little boy, he loved to listen to stories about the wild west and dreamed of becoming a cowboy. So, he left home when he was just 15 years old to make his dream come true.
Guy traveled around the country, learning to be a cowboy. He became very good at riding horses and even learned some tricks, like roping, which is throwing a loop of rope to catch things. He was so good at these tricks that he started to perform in shows, making people laugh and cheer.
In his travels, Guy met a woman named Flores LaDue who was a champion trick roper. They fell in love and got married. Together, they performed in wild west shows all over the world.
But Guy had a big dream. He wanted to have a grand rodeo to celebrate the skills and spirit of the old west. So, in 1912, he started the Calgary Stampede in Canada. It was a huge success! People came from all around to see the exciting rodeo events, like bull riding and horse racing.
Guy also invited the Indigenous people to share their traditions at the Stampede. He wanted everyone to learn about their culture and appreciate their skills with horses.
Guy Weadick's dream became a tradition. Even today, every year in Calgary, cowboys and cowgirls gather for the Stampede. They compete in rodeo events, share delicious food, and have a great time. And it's all thanks to a boy who loved the wild west and grew up to share that love with the world.
Remember, just like Guy Weadick, if you believe in your dreams and work hard, you can make them come true!
