Music in our Schools Month - March each year

Kaitlyn's Band Concert in Grade 9
March is Music in our Schools Month, which has been celebrated since 1985! The celebration of music in schools actually began a bit earlier when the National Assosiation of Music Education created a day to celebrate music education on March 13th, 1975. Actually, even before this, the state of New York started celebrating teaching music in 1973. Music in our Schools Month encourages schools to create music education programs for children of all ages because there are countless benefits of learning about, playing, and enjoying music.
Some Cool Benefits of Music:
- Learning to play music at a young age can boost mental abilities, especially reading, speaking, and math abilities.
- This is pretty common sense, but music is a great tool for allow kids to express themselves and boost their confidence.
- Music can help our motor skills because playing an instrument requires a lot of coordination between the mind and body and even dancing to music is a good exercise for our bodies!
- Listening to music can strengthen our emotions. Listening to music can be a very powerful tool for understanding our emotions and experiences, espcially during asolescence. That is why it is so easy to rememeber those nostalgic songs from our teenage years!
Music class was one of my favourite classes from school and I still remember some of the songs I learned, like "little bunny foofoo"! There are tons of way to appreciate music at home like karaoke, playing the humming game (where you hum the tune and others have to guess the song — this is especially fun to do while brushing your teeth!), and having seated dance parties in the car ride to school! We also have tons of great musical crafts and activities on the site, so put on some tunes, sing-a-long, and do some crafting to celebrate Music in our Schools Month!
