Share a Smile Day - March 1st
Share a Smile Day is celebrated on March 1st every year and it is very easy to celebrate — all you have to do is smile at people or smile back if someone smiles at you! Smiling is lots of fun and is a great way to promote well-being.
There are a bunch of muscles in our face that help us smile, especially the muscles around our mouth and eyes. When we smile, those muscles send signals to our brain and the brain uses those signals to figure out our mood. So when we smile, our brain thinks that we are happy and in response releases the happiness chemical called dopamine. So it ends up being a great cycle: when we are happy, we smile and when we smile, we get more happy! In fact, even if you don't feel very happy you can smile or even fake laugh and basically trick your brain into boosting your mood!
Some cool facts about smiling:
- It can take up to 52 muscles to smile.
- It actually requires more muscles to frown than it does to smile.
- Babies can smile for lots of different reasons when they are very young, but a "true" smile is called a social smile and typically happens around 4 to 6 weeks old. A true smile looks different from earlier smiles because it involves the whole face not just the baby's mouth.
- A smile is the universal sign of happiness!
As my mom always says, "sharing is caring" and what could be better to share than a smile! Below are several crafts and activities that will help you celebrate Share a Smile Day on March 1st!
