Firefighter's Day is celebrated world wide on May 4th and is a chance for people to show their appreciation and recognition for the honourable work done by firefighters! Firefighters risk their lives to help keep people safe and their committment to helping others is something we should all be incredibly grateful for. Firefighers mainly respond to fires, which is what we usually think of as the typical firefighter job. But interestingly, firefighters respond to a lot of other emergencies such as crashes, chemical spills, and flooding/water rescues. Firefighting isn't just a paid job, a lot of firefighters do the work voluntarily to keep their communities safe!
Firefighting has been around for a long time but firefighters haven't always had the same tools for stopping fires. For example, the fire hydrants that we see today were first invented in 1801 by Frederick Gaff and the first fire extinguisher wasn't invented until 1813 by George Manby. It wasn't until 1853 that Miles Greenwod invented a steam fire engine and since then the fire engine has evolved a lot! Now we have super interesting technologies to help fight fires, like drones that spray water from the sky!
Below are several firefighter and fire safety activities that are a great way to celebrate this important day and appreciate all the work that firefighters do! Plus, the fire safety activities are a great way to teach children the ways that they can help firefighters by being safe and preventing emergencies.
