Died: May 12, 1967 in Abingdon, Oxfordshire
John Masefield was an English poet and writer. He received many acclaims for his works including the Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom from 1930 until his death in 1967.
After both his parents passeed away at a young age he lived with his aunt who sent him to boarding school. In 1891 he left school to board a ship and train for a life at sea but found there was a lot of time to read and write.
In 1895 he decided to leave the sea behind and focus on his writing. He had many odd jobs while reading up to 20 books a week. By age 24 his poems, novels and plays were being published. He became a great lecturer and received Honorary Doctorates from Yale, Harvard and Oxford University.
